Auspicious Invocation
ajñāna-timirāndhasya
Prema Bhakti Chandrika contains 10 songs, composed by Narottama Dasa Thakura.
Prema-bhakti-candrika, the moonlight of loving devotional service, is Narottama dasa Thakura's other great work alongside Prarthana, and a quite different kind of book: where Prarthana moves through twenty-five short, personal prayers, this one is closer to an instruction manual, popularly known among Gaudiya Vaishnavas as Sri Rupanuga-gita for how closely it distills the teaching of Rupa Gosvami into ten connected songs. It opens with an auspicious invocation and homage at the feet of the guru, then works systematically through the process of fixed devotional service, surrender of the self, undivided service to Radha and Krishna together, meditation for arousing genuine prema-bhakti, and the marks by which an unalloyed devotee can actually be recognised, before closing on what the book itself simply calls its ultimate instructions. Where songbooks elsewhere on this site tend to move through moods — confession, longing, faith, glorification — Prema-bhakti-candrika moves instead through a sequence of teachings, each song building on the last, reading less like a set of individual prayers and more like a short, connected treatise on how devotional life is actually meant to be practiced.
