Siddhi lālasā — Hankering for Perfection

From Gitamala by Bhaktivinoda Thakura.

Siddhi-lalasa, hankering for perfection, closes Gita-mala with ten songs voicing Bhaktivinoda Thakura's own final description of spiritual accomplishment as Gaudiya Vaishnava theology understands it: not liberation in any impersonal sense, but a specific, particular hope for birth in Vraja in a spiritual body as one of the gopis, trained under the guidance of Radharani's intimate associates, foremost among them Lalita and Rupa Manjari, toward eternal, personal service at Her lotus feet. Coming directly after Rupanuga-bhajana-darpana's twenty-nine songs of sadhana, the section reads as that practice's intended destination made explicit, closing the book on aspiration rather than achievement already secured. The same hankering recurs, in other language, at the close of several of Bhaktivinoda's other songbooks — Kalyana-kalpataru's Prarthana-Lalasamayi among them — making Siddhi-lalasa one of the clearest, most direct statements of a longing that runs through his devotional songwriting generally, not confined to Gita-mala alone.
