Long after Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's own pastimes had ended, Mahesh Pandit's name surfaces once more in the tradition's record, this time not beside Nityananda Prabhu Himself, but in the account of a much younger devotee who came looking for the associates Nityananda Prabhu had left behind.
Khardaha, Nityananda Prabhu's Own Seat #
Khardaha, on the Bengal side of the Ganges, was Nityananda Prabhu's own principal seat in His later years, and it remained, after His disappearance, a place where His family and closest associates continued to live and to be sought out by later generations of Vaishnavas. Jahnava Mata, Nityananda Prabhu's wife, and their son Viracandra Prabhu both continued to preside over the Vaishnava community gathered there, which is part of why the town went on drawing visiting devotees for generations after Nityananda Prabhu Himself had disappeared. By the time of the events described below, Mahesh Pandit himself was among those still to be found there. The sources give no date, only the fact of his presence in the town when the visit occurred.
Narottama Dasa Thakura's Visit #
Narottama Dasa Thakura, a generation removed from Mahaprabhu's own direct associates, is remembered in Narahari Chakravarti's Bhakti-ratnakara as having traveled to Khardaha and, while there, sought out Mahesh Pandit specifically to take darshan of his lotus feet. It is a small gesture in the text, a single sentence in a long chronicle, but its shape is not hard to read: a devotee of the following generation, already deeply established in bhakti in his own right, went out of his way to honor a surviving companion of Nityananda Prabhu simply because of who that companion had walked beside. The Bhakti-ratnakara does not record what, if anything, passed between them beyond the visit itself.
Called a Parama-mahanta #
Vrindavana Dasa Thakura's Sri Chaitanya-bhagavata independently pays Mahesh Pandit a similar honor in different language, calling him a parama-mahanta, a great and exalted soul, and noting specifically how dear he was to Nityananda Prabhu. Different retellings of this reference locate it at different points within the Chaitanya-bhagavata's text, and no single verse citation can be settled on with confidence; the underlying fact, that Vrindavana Dasa Thakura uses this title for him, is nonetheless attested independently of the Bhakti-ratnakara passage above, by a second author writing in a different work.
Between the two references, a consistent picture holds even where the exact citations do not line up: a devotee known in his own lifetime chiefly for his closeness to Nityananda Prabhu and for the unguarded, dancing ecstasy for which he is remembered on his own main biography page, and remembered a generation later, at Khardaha, as someone worth a special visit and a title reserved for the genuinely advanced.
