Prarthana

Prarthana contains 54 songs, composed by Narottama Dasa Thakura, arranged in 25 chapters.

Prarthana, prayers, is Narottama dasa Thakura's best-known work alongside the shorter Prema-bhakti-candrika, and the source of some of the most widely sung compositions in the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition today, Je Anilo Prema Dhana and Gauranga Bolite Habe among them. Unlike Bhaktivinoda Thakura's later songbooks, which group songs into a handful of substantial thematic sections, Prarthana is built as a sequence of twenty-five short, individually titled prayers, most only a song or two long, moving in a recognisable progression: it opens with dainya, honest confession of one's own fallen condition, passes through a long central run of songs titled lalasa, longing, in several distinct registers — for divine service, for residence in Vrndavana, for a renewed vision of Mathura — continues through nistha, settled faith in Gauranga and Nityananda, and closes with several vijnapti, direct petitions addressed to Krishna, the gopis, and Rupa and Rati Manjari, asking for a spiritual body fit for eternal service in Vraja. Because each individual section is so brief, this site describes most of them only briefly in turn below; what is genuinely substantial about Prarthana is this overall architecture, carried by one devotee's own honest voice across all twenty-five short movements, more than it is any single section on its own.
