Lakshmipati Tirtha is, on the evidence available, the most thinly documented figure in this whole guru chain: a name holding together two far better documented lives, his guru Vyasa Tirtha on one side, a major, well-attested figure in Vijayanagara-era Dvaita Vedanta, and his disciple Madhavendra Puri on the other, the acharya Chaitanya-charitamrita calls the seed of the entire Gaudiya bhakti tree. Almost everything that can be said about him is drawn from what those two other lives, and Srila Prabhupada's purports connecting them, happen to preserve.
Closing a Gap Already Named #
Madhavendra Puri's own page, published earlier, already named Lakshmipati Tirtha as his guru and described the disciplic line "from Madhvacharya down through Lakshmipati" in Srila Prabhupada's own words, but had no page to link to, since Lakshmipati Tirtha himself had not yet been written about. With this page, that link can finally be made, and the fuller chain running from Madhvacharya through Rajendra Tirtha, Jayadharma, Purushottama Tirtha, Brahmanya Tirtha, and Vyasa Tirtha, through Lakshmipati Tirtha, to Madhavendra Puri and onward through Isvara Puri to Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu Himself, becomes traceable name by name.
A Prominence the Independent Record Does Not Match #
It is worth stating plainly, one more time: Lakshmipati Tirtha's prominence in this guru chain, as the single most important link in the whole six-name chain, considerably outstrips his prominence in any independently documented Dvaita-tradition source available. The Madhva sampradaya's own succession records, as cited even within Srila Prabhupada's own purport to Madhya 9.245, and the Vyasaraja Matha's own account of Vyasa Tirtha's disciples, do not preserve him. What preserves him is almost entirely the Gaudiya tradition's own memory, carried forward because of who he is said to have taught. That imbalance is not a flaw; it is the honest shape of the historical record, told here plainly rather than smoothed over.
What Remains of Him #
What remains, in the end, is modest but real: a name in a guru-parampara list recited for centuries by Gaudiya Vaishnavas, two careful, hedged mentions in Srila Prabhupada's own purports, a devotional story of Lord Balarama's mercy preserved outside the mainstream account, and a single photograph of a samadhi at Srirangam that may or may not be his. On the strength of that, and of the disciple whose own devotion tradition remembers so much more fully, Sri Lakshmipati Tirtha keeps his place in the chain now traced between Sri Madhvacharya and Sri Madhavendra Puri.
